Up until the 1980s it was favoured as the minor component in three way blends with Shiraz and Cabernet. Now Shiraz is made as a varietal and Cabernet is blended with Merlot, typically 80/20. Malbec seemed destined for obscurity as few old malbec vineyards were replanted with the variety. Quite a few wineries are now making varietal malbecs, a change in consumer attitudes and a desire for winelovers to try something new has improved the prospects for marketing malbec in Australia.
